Features

Challenges in pre-pre-analytics

The majority of diagnostic test errors come from the pre-pre-analytic phase before samples even reach the laboratory for analysis.¹ navify Sample Tracking provides you with the operational insights to optimize your pre-pre-analytical operations. This digital solution comprises multiple innovative solutions from our collaborators which makes it highly customizable to fit your specific needs.

Illustration of an iceberg showing 62% errors in the pre-analytic stage, 15% in the analytic stage and 23% in the post-analytic stage, highlighting key error distribution in laboratory processes.

Pre-analytical challenges collectively account for 62%¹ of diagnostic errors

Specific errors include tube filling (13%), patient identification (9%), inappropriate container use (8%), request procedure issues (8%), empty tubes (7%), missing tubes (3%), non-refrigerated samples (2%), misinterpreted orders (1%) and other errors (11%).

Reducing errors in the sample journey outside the lab

In North American and European hospitals, each pre-pre-analytical error costs an average of $208 and accounts for about 0.7% of operating costs.¹ ² Effective tracking at this stage is essential, but integrating the right solutions can be complex. Watch the video and discover how navify Sample Tracking connects labs with an ecosystem of third-party providers, offering access to innovative services with one simple IT integration.

Benefits

Enhancing efficiency and accuracy

navify Sample Tracking streamlines the pre-pre-analytical process by reducing errors, improving sample visibility and enhancing collaboration between labs and pre-analytical solution providers.

Supporting better end-to-end diagnostics: the vital role of pre-pre-analytics

Pre-pre-analytical errors significantly impact patient safety and the entire diagnostic process.2 In this insightful video, Mario Plebani, professor of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Padova, discusses the vulnerabilities in the pre-pre-analytical phase and highlights the need for collaboration and technological innovation to reduce errors. Watch to learn how addressing these challenges can improve diagnostic accuracy.

CBT Bonn’s experience with navify Sample Tracking and S4DX

The Center for Blood Coagulation Disorders and Transfusion Medicine (CBT) in Bonn, Germany, is a healthcare organization with several medical care centers and affiliated laboratories. The center’s focus on digitizing processes, combined with its end-to-end blood sample workflow, created the ideal environment to explore the benefits of linking a pre-pre-analytics solution to the CBT LIS through navify Sample Tracking. See how the error rates reported decreased as navify Sample Tracking and S4DX were increasingly used.

We see the comprehensive quality monitoring of the sample journey as an important contribution to value-based healthcare.

Transforming pre-analytics at CBT³

At the Center for Blood Coagulation Disorders and Transfusion Medicine (CBT) Bonn, navify Sample Tracking together with the S4DX system, a pre-analytical solution, addressed 4 of the 8 most common pre-analytical errors reported in the literature. For example, patient identification was facilitated through digital barcode scans. Errors in inappropriate containers decreased from 0.34% to 0 errors for five consecutive quarters. Tube filling errors and missing test tubes errors decreased from 2.26% and 13.72% to 0% and 2.31% respectively in the final quarter.

0%Inappropriate container errors

Errors in inappropriate containers decreased from 0.34% to 0 errors for five consecutive quarters.

0.02%Difficult collections minimized

Difficult sample collections reduced from 2.45% to 0.02%, improving collection efficiency and accuracy.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about navify Sample Tracking

If you don’t find answers to your questions here, we’re happy to provide more information and discuss your needs in detail.

What are pre-pre-analytical errors, and why are they important?

Pre-pre-analytical errors occur before a laboratory receives a sample, including during test ordering, patient identification, sample collection and transportation. These errors are significant because they account for 62%¹ of all lab errors, which can lead to increased operating costs, delayed results and decreased patient trust.

How does navify Sample Tracking address pre-pre-analytical errors?

navify Sample Tracking integrates with laboratory information systems (LIS) to provide visibility and control over the pre-pre-analytical phase. By facilitating collaboration between pre-pre-analytical solution providers and labs, it can reduce common errors like incorrect patient identification and inappropriate container and tube filling issues.

What makes navify Sample Tracking unique compared to other solutions?

Unlike other systems that only address specific parts of the pre-pre-analytical process, navify Sample Tracking provides a comprehensive solution. It connects the entire pre-pre-analytical pathway from test ordering to sample reception, simplifying integration and offering flexibility through collaborations with multiple pre-pre-analytical providers.

How does navify Sample Tracking improve laboratory efficiency?

By digitizing the pre-pre-analytical process, navify Sample Tracking reduces manual data entry and lowers the likelihood of errors. This automation can lead to greater efficiency, lower costs and improved compliance with international quality standards like ISO 15189.
