Overview

Identifying individuals at risk for lower GI disorders and iron deficiency anemia

In the US, 5–12% of non-pregnant women and 1–5% of men have iron deficiency anemia (IDA), while occult bleeding from the GI tract is the leading cause for IDA in men and postmenopausal women.2 Bleeding lesions in the GI tract are identified in about 50% of patients with IDA.3 GI malignancy is also significantly more common in men and postmenopausal women with IDA, with a prevalence of 10–17%.4–6

2nd deadliest cancer

Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer worldwide for both sexes, with over 900,000 annual deaths and 1.9 million annual new cases.7

Early detection

Detecting CRC early is crucial, as the 5-year survival rate for CRC in the US (early stages, both sexes) is 90% for localized stages.8

Screening compliance

In the US, only about 59% of adults aged 45 and older are up to date with colorectal cancer screening, and screening prevalence varies substantially across populations.9

LGI-Flag is a software tool that is intended to identify individuals at risk for lower GI disorders that warrant further evaluation.¹

The imperative of early screening

Despite recommendations from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) for routine screening beginning at age 45, fewer than one-third (~33%) of colorectal cancers are diagnosed at an early stage in the US10 — partially reflecting suboptimal screening participation.

Harnessing data: transforming complete blood count (CBC) data into health insights

There is a need to proactively identify and diagnose GI disorders earlier. Despite significant efforts and evidence to suggest the benefits of being screened for colorectal cancer (CRC), many eligible patients are not being screened for it.11 LGI-Flag uses demographic information (age, sex) and historic CBC test results to flag individuals with CBC patterns that may be associated with an increased risk for lower GI disorders.1

The intended use of LGI-Flag: driving patient insights on GI health

Identify individuals at risk

LGI-Flag is a computational software tool used to identify individuals at risk for lower GI disorders that warrant further evaluation.1

Algorithm parameters

LGI-Flag uses demographic information (age and gender at birth) and historic CBC test results electronically available in clinical data repositories and patients' electronic health records (EHR).1

Indicated target audience

LGI-Flag is indicated for use in individuals of the general population, between 45 and 75 years of age, who are not under active GI surveillance.1

Benefits

Enhance colorectal screening: the key advantages of LGI-Flag

By leveraging LGI-Flag, healthcare providers can enhance patient screening processes, improve detection rates and ultimately drive better health outcomes in the fight against colorectal cancer.1,11
